The aim is for us to establish an innovative and creative society
The aim of the Learning Society implies much more than a collection of innovative individuals. There are always opportunities for developing individuals but the greatest opportunity lies in the areas of the systems that bring us together as a society.
A typical societal system would be our Education system that involves pupils/students, teachers/lecturers, parents, administrators, organisations that use skilled and qualified individuals, the media etc. Everybody inputting in their own unique way to provide a network of invisible and reinforcing contributions that make up the Education system. Similarly we could be considering The Health System or The Law Enforcement System, or the Public Administration System and of course how all these systems interrelate.
We build community out of crisis and we build community by accident,
but we do not know how to build community by design.
Scott Peck (Author of The Road Less Traveled)
Can we, collectively, each of us contributing in one way or other, be continually developing the design of these systems that define our society?
Can we create, in Scotland, a learning society that is continually questioning and improving the systems that bind us together?
The remaining pages of the site explore the implications of this challenge. It is obviously complex, long term and not for the faint hearted.
In fact we have little option. We either accept this challenge or allow our society to be moulded by others perusing their own interests. This is especially the case in the economic environment where the leaders of powerful multinationals make decisions relative to their needs rather than the communities they serve.
We also have to contend with the implications of impeding ecological collapse.
The basis of this initiative is to involve all forward thinking individuals and groups in Scotland. We aim to create a critical mass of those committed to moving our society forward.
Please get involved.
