Methods

As we emphasize on this site, you first have to getting the thinking right before you consider methods. If you recall in the "Knowledge" article we had the following relationship

Theory leads to Methods which provide Results

If we are tempted to go to methods without fully appreciating the theory then the likelihood is that your organisation will apply new methods onto old theories and it will secure poor returns for any investment. We refer back to the article "What has Not Worked in the Past"

The purpose of this initiative and site is draw us back to the theory/knowledge/wisdom level. And from a foundation of knowledge go on to consider the appropriate methods

With time this page will be expanded considerably. - In the interim may we start by pointing you to some sources:

In particular we would ask you to be thinking of:

Systems Thinking

The requirement to think holistically and to be looking for methods to analyse both Detail Complexity and Dynamic Complexity.

Data Analysis

The staring point is the recognition that there is variation in everything we measure. The need is to be able to recognise the difference between expected and unexpected variation. The tool for this is the "Control Chart"

Psychology

There has been extensive research in the area of "what makes us tick" - do we like work, is it a need? - do we strive for self acctutalisation? - do bonuses damage our intrinsic motivation? ... etc etc

Knowledge

The call to base our thinking on sound knowledge - a primary emphasis of this site.

The above four headings come from Edwards Deming's "System of Profound Knowledge." We would refer you the Deming Learning Network site www.dln.org.uk and in particular to their pages on methods http://www.dln.org.uk/methods.html - There are many other international sites dedicated to the work of W Edwards Deming.

Peter Senge talks about five components of Organisation Learning - Systems Thinking, Personal Mastery, Mental Models, Building a Shared Vision and Team Learning.   You can secure more information by visiting the "Society for Organisation Learning (SOL). The Headquarters in The States is at http://www.solonline.org/ and the UK branch at http://www.sol-uk.org/

There are numerous sites and books dedicated to Six Sigma. We view Six Sigma as an excellent set of methods once the organisation has transformed its thinking.

Discussion

There is the World Cafe concept which can be accessed from the web site - http://www.theworldcafe.com/index.htm

There is also Community of Practice movement that Margaret Wheatley writes about. Wikipedia have this page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_of_practice - about the concept, and from goggle you can access the many practicing groups across the world.

As mentioned this page will expand considerably as the whole initiative starts to gather pace.
